THE PLANETS

SC.E. 1.2.2  knows that the combination of the Earth's movement and the Moon's own orbit around the Earth results in the appearance of cyclical phases of the Moon.

SC.E 2.2.1 knows that in addition to the Sun, there are many other stars that are far away.

My Very Elegant Mother Just Serve Us Nine Pies

The sun is the star at the center of our solar system. Billions of years ago when the sun was formed, left over gases that accumulated around it in a disk, formed the planets. There are nine planets, which are classified according to their distance from the sun. The closest --named the Inner Planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The Outer Planets are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The Inner and Outer planets are separated by the asteroid belt. This is a ring made of chunks of rock and metals, which scientists believe never formed into planets. The main asteroid belt http://mercury.nineplanets.org:8011/tnp4kids/intro.htm is between Mars and Jupiter.

Activities:

1. Using the table below, build three separate  bar-graphs

  • Distance from the Sun

  • Mass of each planet in relation to the Earth

  • Earth Number of years it takes each planet to circle the Sun.

2. Title the charts.

3. Write two inferences you can make by studying the bar graphs.
