OCEANS

SC.D.1.2.2 knows that 75% of the surface of the Earth is covered by water.

SC.D.1.2.4 knows that the surface of the Earth is in a continuous state of change as waves, weather, and shifts of the land constantly change and produce many new features.

LA.A.2.2.5 reads and organizes information for a variety of purposes.

LA.A.2.2.8 selects and uses a variety of appropriate reference materials, such as maps, charts, and photos, to gather information for research projects.

MA.E.1.2.1 solves problems by generating, collecting, organizing, displaying, and analyzing data using bar graphs and charts.

We should all care. The future of humankind is absolutely dependent on the state of the ocean. Without it, earth would be as barren and inhospitable as Mars.

It has taken billions of years, but here it is: a planet with a built-in source of life support. With or without forests, meadows and grasslands, the earth would roll on. But without the ocean, there would be no forests, no meadows, no rain-filled clouds, no life-giving winds, no coral reefs, no fish, no people.

Nowhere else in the solar system can we walk around and make a living without special gear supplying basic needs.

Learn everything you can about life support; do everything you can to take care of it.

Answer the following questions after visiting the suggested links.

1. What percentage of the Earth's surface is covered by our oceans?

2. How do the oceans affect our Earth?

3. Build a bar graph representing the surface area of each ocean. Make sure your graph has a title, and each bar is labeled.
