"Why the Moon Is Out at Night"
Once upon
a time, when the Earth was new, the Moon was out in the day. One day Moon
took a good look at Sun and saw how much bigger and brighter Sun was. So
Moon woke up Owl.
"Could you
find out where Sun keeps his light?" asked Moon.
"Yes!" exclaimed Owl.
"Thank you. Meet me behind Beaver's nest dam at sundown tomorrow." Moon
whispered.
As Owl went to find out where Sun kept his light, Moon worried. How can
Owl find out where Sun's light is, if Owl wakes up Sun? Moon worried about
this until he went to sleep. After Moon woke up, he worried about Owl
until he came.
"There you are, Owl! -- was getting worried about you." Moon said very
tensely.
"Sun put his light in a chest before sleeping. Owl mischievously
said:
"Thank you, Owl," moon paused, "could you take some for me?" Moon asked.
"Yes, I can." Owl said.
"Meet me here at sundown tomorrow." Moon whispered.
While once again Owl flew toward the Sun's house, Moon worried again.
"What if he gets caught?" Moon said out loud. "Will he be quiet enough?"
Once again Moon worried himself to sleep. The next sundown Owl came with
a piece of Sun's light. Moon put it on himself.
"You look brighter already!" Owl commented.
This procedure happened for a few months. One day Sun looked at Moon and
then looked at himself. Sun realized that Moon had been stealing his
light. So one day Sun asked Moon:
"Do you know where my light is?" Sun asked.
"No!" Moon immediately answered.
Sun stayed awake that night and saw Owl take his light. Sun followed Owl
and saw him give Moon the light. Moon put it on and then Sun confronted
Moon.
"Moon!” --Sun said demandingly. Why have you been taking my light?"
"Because you were so much brighter than me." Moon answered.
Sun stripped Moon of all his light and banished him to sleep in the day
and come out at night. Moon is still stealing Sun's light, with the help
of Owl, at night and putting it back before sunrise.
